Provably Fair Games Explained: How Seeds, Hashes and Verification Work
Provably fair games let players verify a result after the fact using a hashed server seed, a client seed and a nonce. See how it works and what it does not prove.

Key takeaways
- A provably fair game commits to a secret server seed in advance by publishing its hash, so the casino cannot change it after you play.
- You can verify each result by recomputing it from the revealed server seed, your client seed and the bet number (nonce).
- Provably fair proves a result was not altered. It does not lower the house edge and it says nothing about payouts, licensing or whether the casino will pay.
The basic idea
Before you play, the casino generates a secret server seed and shows you only its hash, a fingerprint that cannot be reversed. You provide or accept a client seed. Each bet uses both seeds plus a counter called the nonce to produce the result through a fixed formula.
When you rotate the seed, the casino reveals the old server seed. You can hash it and compare with the fingerprint shown earlier. If they match, the casino could not have changed the seed after seeing your bets.
What it does not prove
- The odds are fair. The formula can have any house edge. Check the published RTP or payout table.
- The casino will pay. Verification covers results, not withdrawals or solvency.
- The casino is licensed. That is a separate question about the operator’s regulator.
Slots versus provably fair games
Most third-party slots use a certified random number generator tested by an external lab, not a seed system. Provably fair is more common on in-house dice, crash and similar games. Read how RTP and volatility work in our guide to reading slot data.
How to verify a result
- Save the hashed server seed before you play.
- After rotating the seed, copy the revealed server seed, your client seed and the nonce.
- Hash the revealed seed and check it matches the earlier fingerprint.
- Recompute the result with the casino’s published formula or an independent verifier.

FAQ
Does provably fair mean I will win more often?
No. It lets you verify that a result was not changed after you bet. It does not change the house edge or the odds of the game.
Are all crypto casino games provably fair?
No. Provably fair is usually offered on a casino's own or selected games such as dice, crash and mines. Most third-party slots rely on a certified random number generator instead.
What can I verify?
With the revealed server seed, your client seed and the nonce, you can recompute the hash and the game result yourself, often with an independent tool.
