Key takeaways

  • Mechanics decide how wins are formed. They do not change the long-run house edge, which is set by the published RTP.
  • Features that stack wins or add multipliers usually push volatility up, because more of the return is held in rare events.
  • Check the studio’s published RTP and volatility rather than inferring them from the mechanic.

Paylines

A classic slot pays when matching symbols land on a defined payline. Games range from a single line to dozens of fixed lines. More lines mean more frequent small hits, but the stake is spread across them, so the number of lines does not by itself change RTP.

Ways to win

In a ways game there are no fixed lines. Matching symbols must appear on consecutive reels from the left, in any row. The number of ways is the product of the symbol counts per reel: on five reels with three rows each, that is 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243 ways.

Megaways

In Megaways the symbol count on each reel varies from spin to spin. With six reels showing between two and seven symbols each, the maximum is 7 to the power of 6, which equals 117,649 ways. Every spin has a different number of ways, so hit frequency and win size vary more. The mechanic was developed by Big Time Gaming and is licensed to other studios.

Cluster pays

Cluster games drop the reel structure. A win is a group of identical symbols touching each other on a grid, with a minimum cluster size set by the game. Cluster layouts are usually paired with cascades, because new symbols must fill the gaps after a win.

Tumble and cascade

After a win, the winning symbols are removed and others fall into the gaps. If this creates a new win, the process repeats within the same spin. Some games attach a rising multiplier to each step of the chain. One bet can therefore produce several wins, and the rare long chains carry a large share of the return, which raises volatility.

Hold and win

Hold and win features, also called respin features, trigger when enough special symbols land. Those symbols lock in place and a small number of respins start, resetting whenever a new symbol lands. Prize values sit on the symbols and the result depends on how many positions fill. The feature usually triggers rarely and pays unevenly.

Expanding symbols

In the free-spin rounds of many games one symbol is chosen to expand and cover its whole reel, which can create wins across many lines at once. Because the bonus round is the main source of large payouts, such games tend to be high volatility.

What each mechanic usually changes

MechanicTypical effect
PaylinesFrequent small hits, moderate swings
Ways to winMore winning combinations per spin
MegawaysVariable ways, wider spread of results
Cluster paysDepends on cascades and cluster size
Tumble with multipliersMore weight on rare long chains
Hold and winRare feature, uneven prizes
Expanding symbolsLarge wins concentrated in the bonus

These are tendencies, not rules. Two games with the same mechanic can have very different volatility. For the numbers behind this, see house edge and RTP maths and our guide to reading RTP, volatility and max win. Published figures for individual games are in the slots catalog.

FAQ

What is the difference between paylines and ways to win?

A payline is a fixed path across the reels. A ways-to-win game pays for matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right regardless of row, so the number of ways is the product of the symbols shown on each reel.

What is Megaways?

Megaways is a mechanic in which the number of symbols on each reel changes every spin, which changes the number of ways to win. It was developed by Big Time Gaming and licensed to other studios.

Do these mechanics change RTP?

Not by themselves. RTP is set by the game's maths. Mechanics mainly change how that return is distributed between frequent small wins and rare large ones.
